Reducing Inflammation with Osteopathic Treatment (RIOT)

For this study we are seeking 40 volunteers with diabetes, obesity, or metabolic syndrome.

Research suggests that inflammation plays a role in heart disease for people with diabetes and / or metabolic syndrome. The RIOT study is an experiment to see if osteopathic manipulative treatment, also known as OMT, can reduce inflammation in people known to have diabetes, obesity, or metabolic syndrome which may also positively influence the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels).

One way to measure inflammation in people is to test for a protein in the blood called C - reactive protein or CRP. Only people with a CRP level of 2 or greater can enter the study.  So, one of the first procedures we do is to draw blood and test the level of CRP. If your value is greater than 2 and you meet the other eligibility criteria you will be invited to join the study.

List of procedures done during the RIOT study.

Screening visit (to confirm eligibility) this will take about 45 mins. At this visit we will:

  • Review and sign consent form
  • Brief physical exam
  • Draw blood

If you qualify, you will be notified by the study coordinator and 3 study appointments will be scheduled for you.

Visit 1 (Baseline visit) this will take about an hour. At this visit we will:

  • Draw blood
  • Measure vital signs
  • Obtain waist and hip measurements
  • Fill out a questionnaire that asks questions about you and how you rate your overall health
  • Visit with the physician for a structural exam with or without osteopathic manipulative treatment
  • Provide a gift card with a $15.00 value

Visit 2 (about 1 week later) this will take about ½ hour. At this visit we will:

  • Measure vital signs
  • Visit with the physician for a structural exam with or without OMT
  • Provide a gift card with a $15.00 value

Visit 3 (final visit, about 1 month from Baseline visit) this will take about ½ hour. At this visit we will:

  • Draw blood (andadditional lab values will be collected from your chart if available )
  • Measure vital signs
  • Obtain waist and hip measurements
  • Fill out a questionnaire that asks questions about you and how you rate your overall health
  • Provide a gift card with a $20.00 value

Please consider this schedule carefully before volunteering to be part of the study. Although we hope that all the research volunteers will decide to complete all the activities listed, it is important for you to know that you may quit the study at any time. If you decide for any reason not to complete the study, this will not impact your relationship with any of the study physicians or your care at Solano County Family Health Services.

Thank you for considering the RIOT trial.
